We have made a very good start to the course as the sessions are lively and intellectually engaging. The research topics are varied and will have a direct impact on the culture of the school, which is high achieving and popular with parents.’

This is very good news for Middlesex and the Midwheb Partnership as we are gaining an outstanding reputation across our local schools and are very pleased that Barnet Schools are on board.

What is education for?

confernece.jpg

About 40 educational practitioners and researchers drawn from schools, FE, HE and postgraduate programmes met at Trent Park to discuss the issue last Saturday.

Mick Waters, Director of Curriculum at QCA oulined the new secondary national curriculum in the UK, weaving strands, of subjects, skills, knowledge and personal development. Mick was keen to point out how schools have to work with a diverse range of pupis and communities.

In a challenging panel discussion also speaking were:-
  • Dr Gary Day, Principal Lecturer, De Montfort University
  • Professor Sally Power, Cardiff University
  • Claire Fox, Director, Institute of Ideas
  • Dr Dennis Hayes
  • Head of Centre for Professional Education, Canterbury Christ Church University
  • and Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University
Education for educations sake was challenged by education for social change, for the needs of the economy and for personal development.  The notion of critical engagment with ideas was exploired. "What is education for?" provides a perfect backdrop to all our research and development.
